Sims Park

The Sim’s Park in Coonoor is by far the highlight attraction in Coonoor. Coonor is located in Tamil Nadu, India and is a municipality and a city. The area of Coonoor is famous for its Nilgiri Tea and in the recent years seen a burst in tourism to the area. The Coonoor Sim’s Park was constructed in 1874 and spans an area of over 12 hectares. The Coonoor Sim’s Park is a botanical garden. The garden is at an elevation of 1,780 meters above sea level. The temperature range at the Coonoor Sim’s Park can go from a low of five degrees centigrade to a maximum of thirty degrees centigrade. The Coonoor Sim’s Park experiences a mean precipitation of one hundred and fifty centimeters.
The Coonoor Sim’s Park was founded by Major Murray and Mr. J.D. Sims. The Coonoor Sim’s Park is nested within a deep narrow valley. The park is in the northern area of Coonoor’s railway station. Coonoor Sim’s Park is an ideal place to have a leisurely stroll around and is a particularly popular destination during the hot months of India, due to its much cooler climate.Coonoor Sim’s Park also plays host to the annual “Fruit Show” organized by the region’s horticultural society. In addition to this there are also many other annual shows that are held at the Coonoor Sim’s Park.

The park holds a wide spectrum of plants from 85 families which have 255 genera that consist of over 1000 species. The park has numerous rare and exotic specimens from around the world. This garden was laid out in 1874 Mr.J.D. Sim, the then Secretary to Government and Major Murray, acting Superintendent of the Nilgiris forest and the park was named after the former. Though this was started as a pleasure resort for the residents and visitors, the park has now developed into Garden. This garden is spread over 12 heactares of undulating land and possesses a number of natural advantages at an elevation of 1768 - 1798 metres above M.S.L.

The park cum botanical garden contains many species of trees and shrubs not found in Ooty. Annual Fruit and Vegetables show is held every year in May here attracts tourists in large numbers. Pomological research station located near Sim's park can also be seen which do research on nursery plants and fruits. The Pasteur Institute may also be seen just across Sim's Park which produces anti-rabi Vaccine, DTP, DT, and TT.
